When I was in Budapest for three years, I bought copies for my parents and a cousin. They cost 300-some forints at the time, an early-90s edition, hard-bound.
$70 is a bit steep for me, now that I want my own bloody copy. Any leads, folks?

I just met up with a BP friend this past month; hadn't seen her in 9 years, although we'd spoken at least once a year. I'm brushing up my magyarul (although I haven't gotten to the point of figuring out the stupid keystroke combinations, yet).

I searched a few different sites scanning for the book; I just find that Amazon is the best all-around search & reference tool (& keeps my "wish-list" in once place). I usually buy elsewhere, though! -

i went to zsirorszag via the Teach hungary program from Beloit College in southern Wisco. It's now called something like the Central Euro Teaching Prog. i think they are still running.
hungary was the opportunity at the time, i could have just as easily gone to zimbabwae, portugal, or venezuela. but i'm glad i did go to hungary at that time, early 90's, a very unique time and unique place in post-soviet eastern euro.

Re: The Gourmet's Cookbook, Elek Magyar
Sat, December 31, 2005 - 1:14 PMI consider myself somewhat of a conneisseur on Hungarian cookbooks. If you cannot find the "Gourmet's" try the GUNDEL's Hungarian cookbook - newly re-published around $12 on Amazon. I bought around 5 for X'mas presents. But my bible is George Lang's "Cuisine of Hungary" that can be found between 12-26$. By the way Lang bought Gundel's in Budapest in 1990. For non-Hungarians - GUNDEL's restaurantis the BEST Hungarian restaurant since 1910.
